VOLUNTEERING

CMS has a strong commitment to community and family involvement in the schools. The Volunteer and Partnerships Department is responsible for coordinating volunteer programs throughout CMS. A Volunteer Supervisor works with individuals who are in Middle School & High School level to provide support and assistance in meeting their volunteer needs. At the Elementary School Level: Volunteers are an important part of every school. They play a vital role by assisting teachers and other staff members as well as providing individualized attention for students. At the elementary level, volunteers work with students as tutors, mentors, and lunch or reading buddies. At the Middle School Level: Middle school students are more independent and peer oriented than elementary students. Volunteers are still a vital part of the school experience, their time and talents are very much needed. Volunteers can chaperone field trips and other events.

OUR SPANISH CORNER

If your child has trouble learning in school because he or she does not speak English well this is called Limited English Proficiency (LEP). The school is obligated to help your child. In addition to English, the school must teach your child math, science, and everything that the other students are learning. If your child cannot speak English at all, the school might, for example teach math in your language, and then teach English separately. If your child can speak some English, he or she might take classes such as math or science in English. With all of the other students, they will have separate classes to improve his or her English. Your child should not be separated from the other students in all of his or her classes. For example, in art, music, or physical education classes, your child should be with students who are not LEP. If your child is (LEP) the school must tell you what it will do to help. The school must try to write you in the language you speak. The school must also send you the same information that it sends to all parents. They are required to write it in your language.
